An interactive light sculpture designed in the form of a giant human head invites visitors to Sydney’s 2014 Vivid Light Festival to see themselves in a totally new light.

Created by The Buchan Group for the Festival, “e│MERGEnce” plays on themes of scale, personality and image.  By day it is a study in the reduction and abstraction of the human form to a basic, albeit turbulent, geometry.  But when the lights go on, the form becomes a canvas for projection mapping and video-captured interaction with festival visitors. It also features motion and sound-reactive elements. http://instagram.com/p/oTOp5IsgEF/

Senior Associate Anthony Rawson led the team that designed and built e│MERGEnce.  “Our intent was to give Vivid visitors the chance to “embody” the physical sculpture and become part of the festival itself,” he said.  “e|MERGEnce plays on themes of scale, personality and realism, and invites the audience to see themselves as never before using amplified light, shade, texture and colour effects”

The process of designing and creating e│MERGEnce presented new opportunities to experiment with some of the new methods of digital fabrication, 3D scanning and generative design that are beginning to shape the built environment.  It drew on The Buchan Group’s specialist digital design and fabrication skills, as well as 3D projection mapping experience.

e│MERGEnce (#vividemergence) is installed in Martin Place, Sydney during the Vivid Light Festival (#vividsydney), which runs from May 23 until June 9, 2014, daily at 6.00pm.
