Rundle Place Opens

April 30, 2013

Rundle Place has brought a new international retail destination to Adelaide’s Rundle Mall. Pacific Shopping Centre’s $385M development of the former Harris Scarfe site was designed by The Buchan Group to draw new, international brands to the Adelaide CBD for the first time. Signage and wayfinding were included in the design.

The development has created a strong retail connection between Rundle Mall and the Grenfell Street commercial precinct and, comprises four integrated levels around a central atrium, with 70 specialty shops, a highly contemporary food court, the first full-line Coles supermarket in the Adelaide CBD and Harris Scarfe’s flagship Australian store

Rundle Place opened on March 26, 2013. Principal Andrew Mackenzie and Associate Paul Harrison led The Buchan Group on the development.

ADELAIDE CASINO REDEVELOPMENT

February 6, 2013

SKYCITY’s $350M redevelopment of Adelaide Casino will give Adelaide a world-class integrated entertainment facility.  The project was announced on December 19, 2012, by SKYCITY CEO Nigel Morrison, who said that the new complex was set to become the jewel in the crown of the Riverbank Precinct.  Designed by The Buchan Group under the leadership of Principal David Cole, the redevelopment comprises Adelaide’s first six-star boutique hotel with rooftop lounge bar and pool, VIP villas and adjoining gaming salons, new restaurants and high-end retail experiences.

Robina Town Centre wins ICSC Gold Design Award

QIC Global Real Estate’s Robina Town Centre has won the Renovation and Expansion Gold Design Award in the Design and Development category at the International Council of Shopping Centres’ (ICSC) Asia Pacific Shopping Centre Awards in Shanghai.  The development was designed by The Buchan Group.

QIC Global Real Estate Managing Director, Steven Leigh, said the ICSC Shopping Centre Awards are the industry’s most prestigious.

“To win the Renovation and Expansion Gold Design Award in the Design and Development category is outstanding international recognition for Robina Town Centre,” said Mr Leigh.

“The criteria considered many different elements, including the quality and innovation of the design concept, master planning and land use, financial performance including sales productivity and occupancy, as well as retail configuration and layout, and the quality of internal and external finishes.”

The project has also been awarded 2011 Property Council of Australia (Qld) Excellence in Design Award, 2010 Property Council of Australia Retail Property of the Year Award, and 2009 Property Council of Australia (Qld) Retail Property of the Year.  The Buchan Group team for Robina Town Centre was led by Project Principal Peter Zillman and Associate Director Gary Butler. 

All 2012 ICSC Gold Award winners are automatically submitted for the 2013 Global Best of the Best ICSC VIVA (Vision, Innovation, Value, Achievement) Awards Programme.

Client: Golden Age
The Emerald is a new 20-storey residential apartment tower located on a prime site between St Kilda Road and Kings Way, at 35 Albert Road, Melbourne. The project was granted Planning Approval in August 2011 and is currently in marketing phase, with construction expected to commence in 2013. The tower features a striking organic rippling form and comprises a 5-storey podium containing car parking and apartments, surmounted by a further 15 levels of apartments. There are 291 apartments and 294 car spaces, as well as a  roof-top garden with spa pools, amenities and BBQ area. The building design achieves 5-star Green Star rating. The Buchan Group is responsible for the architectural design and documentation, with Hecker Guthrie undertaking the interior design.

Client: Tesco Property China
The Buchan Group Shanghai is working with Tesco Property China on a roll-out of retail centres across China. Following a review of Tesco’s development portfolio, The Buchan Group has prepared the detailed design of six projects for delivery, including Interior Design and graphic design for two of the developments. The Tesco retail centres across China range in size up to 100 000m² and typically comprise a mix of specialty, entertainment and food retailing over five levels, with a Tesco hypermarket and car parking below ground.  The first of these current projects, at Zibo, is scheduled to open towards the end of 2012.

Riverside Richmond, Burnley, Vic

Client: Salta Properties
The Riverside Richmond apartments and townhouses development received Planning Approval in 2011 and comprises four separate residential apartment blocks ranging from four to eight levels in height, containing a total of 388 apartments, plus an additional single block of 17 three and four level townhouses. The site is directly adjacent to the Yarra River and large communal landscaped areas are a feature of the project. The overall project achieves 5-star Green Star rating. Construction of the townhouses is expected to commence late 2012 and the apartments in 2013. The Buchan Group is responsible for the architecture and interior design.

A 15 level commercial tower in Fortitude Valley is planned for Queensland’s fastest growing commercial precinct. The development by Prime Space Projects comprises 14 levels of commercial office space totalling 22,130m², a multi-level basement car park and ground floor retail tenancies, and a foyer connecting Wickham Street with Acland Lane, a proposed future laneway. The lower two floors have been recessed at Constance Street to preserve sightlines to the adjacent Mill Building, a Local Heritage Place. A DA has been lodged with Brisbane City Council.

Silverleaf Apartments, Melbourne, Vic.

Client: Lustig & Moar Group
Construction commenced in early 2012 on this 14 storey residential apartment development in Kings Way, Melbourne. It comprises 155 apartments and 185 car spaces and retains an existing two-storey Victorian heritage building, which is to be restored for retail and commercial accommodation. The design features a curving stepped tower form and a 4-storey art wall that wraps across the Kings Way facade of the new building and envelops the heritage building. Maximum floor space efficiency and quality residential amenity are a feature of the apartments, which are orientated to maximize views. The building achieves 5-star Green Star rating.

ICSC HONORS CHADSTONE

Chadstone’s West Mall development has been named by the International Council of Shopping Centres as a Design & Development Honoree at the 2012 VIVA Awards. The award follows the development’s 2011 Gold Award for Sustainable Design for the Renovation or Expansion of an Existing Project at the ICSC Asia Awards. The Buchan Group and RTKL Los Angeles were architects in association for the development by Colonial First State Retail Trust and Gandel Group.

MAKING A VIVID IMPRESSION

The sub|version installation at Vivid Sydney 2012

The Buchan Group’s 'sub|version' light installation is part of the Vivid Sydney festival that will be lighting up the Sydney cityscape from May 25 to June 11.

The piece is an innovative mapped water projection, and can be seen near the northern Overseas Passenger Terminal tower. The installation extends the virtual performance into the waters of the Quay itself and features elements usually found only on land, including high-contrast people and scenes submerged in symmetry with the spectators. A spotlight reveals forms, figures and patterns hidden in the depths.

The Buchan Group was responsible for the concept design, mapping and all content production, and worked in association with Haycom AV who were responsible for projection, media server and installation.

GOLD FOR WESTFIELD LONDON

May 23, 2012

Westfield London has won the ICSC’s top international award for Design & Development. The project was named as the 2012 ICSC Design & Development VIVA Winner at an award ceremony in Las Vegas on May 21. 

The VIVA Awards recognise Vision, Innovation, Value and Achievement and only Gold winners of ICSC regional awards are eligible to enter. Westfield London was the winner of the 2011 ICSC European Shopping Centre Awards for a New Development:  Extra Large. The £1.7 Billion development is one of Europe’s largest urban shopping centre, with 367 stores and a GLA
of 172 760m². 

The Buchan Group provided Executive Architectural Services for Westfield London development, supporting Westfield’s Concept Design team, acting as lead design consultant for the project and delivering its scope of services from Schematic Design through to Construction Support services and final contract completion. The development opened in October 2008.

CHATSWOOD CHASE TOPS IN NSW

Colonial First State Retail Property Trust’s redevelopment of Chatswood Chase Shopping Centre has been named as the NSW Development of the Year 2012 by the Property Council of Australia. The project also received the ICSC Asia’s 2011 Silver Award for Sustainable Design for the Renovation or Expansion of an Existing Project. The Buchan Group was the architect for the redevelopment, which was completed in 2009.

GOLD AWARD FOR WESTFIELD STRATFORD CITY

Westfield Stratford City has received the British Council of Shopping Centres’ 2011 Gold Award for an In-Town Retail Scheme Over 300 000 ft².  The £1.8B shopping centre opened in September 2011 and is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. The development is the prestigious gateway to the London 2012 Olympic Park and a key component of the regeneration of this significant area in East London.

Westfield appointed The Buchan Group in 2006 to provide Executive Architectural Services for Westfield Stratford City. The Buchan Group supported Westfield’s Design Team, acted as lead design consultant for the Westfield Stratford City project and delivered its scope of services from development of the Scheme Design, (RIBA Stage D), through to Construction Support services and final contract completion.

CHRISTCHURCH RE:START, NZ

January 20, 2012

An innovative shopping precinct designed by The Buchan Group to be constructed from shipping containers has brought shoppers back to the Christchurch CBD and drawn attention from around the world. 

Cashel Mall was badly damaged by the devastating earthquake that struck the city last year and had been closed to the public.  The Buchan Group worked with the city’s Re:START Group and designed a portable, modular concept that could be used for single or multi-storey formats to create an interesting, vibrant retail precinct.  The design created a north and south precinct and sited the containers so as to screen damaged areas.  Generous public space is a feature of both precincts, each of which has a cafe, seating and extensive landscaping. Landowners allowed Re:START to use the land without cost and 27 retailers committed to the project, including Ballantynes department store.  

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key opened the project on October 29, 2011.  Re:START received financial support from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust and ASB.  Associate Anton Tritt led The Buchan Group’s project team.

The Emporium Melbourne will complete the rejuvenation of Myer Melbourne and provide the final link in the chain of upgrades from the Myer Bourke Street and David Jones stores, through to Melbourne Central and QV.  The $1.12B development by Colonial First State Global Asset Management in partnership with GIC is under construction and is expected to open in time for Christmas 2013 trading.  The Buchan Group’s design maximises trading space within the former Myer Lonsdale Street store, providing 46 000m² GLA  for the anticipated 225 tenancies. The Buchan Group’s project team is being led by Director Bruce Shaw and Project Director Chris Ball.

The 950 Hay / The Melbourne development in the heart of the resources / oil and gas precinct of the Perth CBD will create a new A-grade office tower with large floor plates that maximise the strength of its prominent and accessible location.  The new tower will be subtly cantilevered above the heritage-listed Melbourne Hotel and is designed to achieve a 4.5 NABERS rating and a 4 Star Green Star Office V3 rating. As part of the project, 21 of the existing hotel rooms will be refurbished, and 20 new rooms will be constructed Director Lou Cotter is leading The Buchan Group team for the.  The $55M development is by Oakesfield Pte Ltd and is scheduled for completion in early 2014.

SHANGHAI OFFICE LAUNCHED

NZ MARKS 20 YEARS

Clients, consultants and former staff members joined Managing Director Greg Sheehan, Principals Mike Jakobi and Peter Zillman, Associate Director David Thornton and staff of The Buchan Group recently at a cocktail party in Auckland to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Group in New Zealand. Managing Director Greg Sheehan said that the New Zealand practice had played an integral role in shaping the country’s commercial landscape since its opening in 1991 in Auckland. While early projects had drawn on The Buchan Group’s retail expertise with projects such as The Palms, DressSmart and West City Plaza, the range of projects had grown to include Christchurch Art Gallery, commercial offices such as the Hallensteins building in Christchurch, high-rise residential developments and hospitality projects.

Northern Mall Expansion

The Northern Malls expansion of QIC GRE’s Robina Town Centre has been awarded the 2011 Excellence in Design Award at the Property Council of Australia’s Queensland Retail Property Awards. Robina was also a finalist in the category for Retail Property of the Year. The Buchan Group developed a master plan for the expansion and upgrade of Robina in 2000 and has been responsible for every stage of the centre since.

PRO AV SPOTLIGHT AWARD

An audio/video installation designed by The Buchan Group for Rio Tinto CBD Mine has won the 2011 PRO AV Spotlight Judges’ Award. The Spotlight Awards recognize the best professional audio/video installations designed for corporate, education, entertainment, government, and other markets. Entries were judged by a panel of PRO AV, ARCHITECT and ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING editors, contributors, and AV systems integrators and consultants. Winners were required to demonstrate effective collaboration among integrators, designers, architects, and end-users, as well as technical innovation and design excellence.

RAFFLES CITY CHENGDU

October 18, 2011

Construction of Raffles City Chengdu is nearing completion and will be a new landmark in this capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China. The mixed use development by Capitaland comprises five towers designed by Steven Holl. The 77 000m² retail podium has been designed by The Buchan Group, which has also been responsible for the interiors, wayfinding and environmental graphics. The team has been led by Director Phil Schoutrop. The retail mall is expected to open early in 2012 and is the second Raffles City retail development to be designed by The Buchan Group.

WESTFIELD STRATFORD CITY OPENS IN UK

October 18, 2011

Westfield Stratford City in East London opened on September 13. The £1.45 Billion development is the prestigious gateway to the London 2012 Olympic Park and a key component of the regeneration of this significant area in East London.

Three projects by The Buchan Group have been listed as finalists in next month’s ICSC Asia Pacific Shopping Centre Awards. Ayala Land, Inc’s Marquee Mall in Angeles City, Philippines, has been short-listed for the Award for Innovative Design and Development of a New Retail Project. In the category for Renovation or Expansion of an Existing Mall, Chadstone’s West Mall by Colonial First State Retail Trust and Gandel Group, and Chatswood Chase by Colonial First State Retail Property Trust have both been short-listed. The winners will be announced on November 3 at ICSC RECon’s Asia 2011 Convention in Shanghai, China.

INTERNATIONAL AWARD FOR MYER MELBOURNE

October 18, 2011

Myer Melbourne has been recognised as the world’s best new department store. At the 2011 Oracle World Retail Awards in Berlin, Myer Melbourne was awarded the Store Design of the Year Award, a prestigious honour, highly contested by retailers from around the world. Previous winners have included Topshop New York, Niketown London and American Girl Place, Los Angeles. It is the first time that an Australian retailer has won a World Retail award in the five years of the awards program.

The Buchan Group designed the fitout for Myer and providing Executive Architectural Services. The Group is now working with CFSGAM on The Emporium redevelopment of the former Myer Lonsdale Street store.

Christchurch office

March 3, 2011

The earthquake which devastated so much of Christchurch on February 22, 2011, also damaged the Cambridge Terrace office of The Buchan Group. Thankfully, all staff escaped without injury, although some are now living in temporary accommodation and with friends and family while rescue work and demolition continue. A temporary office has been established until the premises are reinstated and we can be contacted on (03) 331 6084 or at the usual email address tbg@chc.buchan.co.nz. MELBOURNE APPOINTS CHAIRMAN

Peter Jackson has been appointed Chairman of The Buchan Group (Melbourne). The former Chief Executive, then Managing Director, of Essendon Football Club, is a leading consultant in strategic planning, organisational reviews, leadership development and structures and has been associated with The Buchan Group (Melbourne) for many years.

Announcing the appointment, Managing Director Bruce Shaw said that the appointment was a key step in the company’s strategic planning and reflected the Company’s vigorous growth and new, enhanced structure in the 120th anniversary of its foundation.

Barrington Shopping Centre

The Buchan Group is designing a 1800m² expansion to this Christchurch shopping centre. Construction will commence in March 2011 and will add a new internal concourse and 11 new specialty stores to the centre, making it a prominent retail offer in the east of the city. The new mall will open in late 2011. The development is by Tinline Properties Ltd and the head contractor is Mainzeal Property and Construction Ltd.

Brisbane director retires

Bruce Lockwood retired on December 23, 2010, after a career of more than 24 years with The Buchan Group.  Bruce was one of the earliest directors of the then Malone Buchan Laird & Bawden practice in Brisbane and has extensive experience leading the design and delivery of major and complex retail, commercial, residential and mixed use projects in Australia and Southeast Asia.  He was Project Director of the Myer Centre and Australian Taxation Office in Adelaide, Royal residences & Guesthouses in Brunei, The Mines Shopping Centre and Mine Beach Resort in Malaysia, The Wharf at Woolloomooloo and Myer Robina.  More recently, Bruce has led projects in Mackay, Ipswich and Victoria Point.

Todd Crighton has been appointed a Director of the Brisbane practice. Todd is a Lead Designer, working on a diverse range of landmark projects. He has comprehensive knowledge and experience in master planning and design specialising in mixed use, retail and multi-residential projects. Todd’s recent projects include Element on Coolum Beach, Vision Tower, Surfers Paradise Hilton, ANA Tower, Marina Mirage redevelopment, Lunchoo and Ipswich Riverlink.

Simon Gregory is an experienced Project Coordinator who has taken a key role on both Retail and Residential projects in his more than seven years with The Buchan Group.  Based in Melbourne, Simon was a senior member of the project team for the highly successful Station Street development at Watergardens Town Centre, a role involving town planning, design development and contract documentation. 

Alex Su has specialist expertise in 3D concept design, schematic design and presentation drawings, and design development. He joined The Buchan Group’s Melbourne office in 2008 and has had a significant design role on the Vogue mixed use development in South Yarra, as well as projects in the Middle East.  

Enoggera School wins award

The Resource Centre designed by The Buchan Group for Enoggera State School received a Commendation in the Brisbane Regional Awards of the Australian Institute of Architects.
