Point Cook Town Centre VIC
Point Cook Town Centre is a Main Street concept designed by The Buchan Group to create a sense of community via its planning, scale, materials and diversity of uses. The site was nominated for development as a town centre by VicUrban, which maintained a design approval role throughout the project.
The street-based retail development is located within an expanding residential growth corridor 25 km south-west of Melbourne and is developed, owned and operated by Walker Corporation. The retail uses are complemented by small business office spaces, child care, gymnasium, library, community centre and kindergarten. The plan is organised into four quadrants, three of which were completed by The Buchan Group in the first stage of the development.
Each quadrant features an iconic corner building that provides scale and an orientation point. Street planting integrates into the rhythm of building and street side car parking, allowing outdoor café seating to blend into the activity of the streetscape.
While the development is highly externalised, it also provides traditional enclosed arcades for shelter during extreme weather conditions. Each quadrant is anchored by a major retailer, including Coles, Target and Aldi. Specialty stores include many national brand retailers.
Complementing the retail offer, shop-top commercial spaces have been integrated into the scheme, providing an all-day presence of local businesses and visitors to the centre. The commercial premises all have identifiable addresses provided through the use of individually coloured, double height glazed entry façades.
Stage 1 of the development was completed and opened for trade in August 2008.
