Buchan’s Melbourne Hotel has received a Commendation for the Commercial Architecture category in the 2018 Australian Institute of Architects Western Australia Awards.
The Jury said “The redevelopment of the Melbourne Hotel brings significant contribution to the life and vitality of this area of Perth.
The more recent pseudo heritage style addition has been demolished in a bold move and replaced with a well-considered contemporary wing. The relationship between the restored and the new has been successfully resolved, bringing natural light deep into the full length of interior adjoining elements.
“The full servicing of the original building has been achieved seamlessly without compromising the roofscape now clearly visible from above.
“Within the challenging economics of this scale in the hotel/hospitality sector involving heritage and restoration, the achievement is remarkable.”
