Coastlands Shopping Town Celebrates Half-Century Milestone

Coastlands Shoppingtown is celebrating a milestone 50-years of operation on the Kāpiti Coast. For nearly 25 years Buchan has been entrusted with executing the vision that Coastlands CEO Richard Mansell and his father Bruce Mansell share for the centre itself and for the Kāpiti community and greater Wellington region.

The growth of the centre from 21 shops in 1969 to over 100 shops to date, and the increase from 6,180m2 to over 49,000m2 of retail space is a testament to Richard and Bruce’s vision which has seen the centre become a mecca for shoppers over the last 50 years.

Buchan Principal Peter Zillman, who first worked with Bruce Mansell in the mid-90s, said: “Not many businesses can claim to have continued success, growth and development for 50 years, and only a few can claim to be amongst the first shopping centres in New Zealand.”

“Paraparaumu has changed dramatically since my first site visit over 23 years ago. Coastlands has grown, the expectations of consumers have grown, and it has been crucial for the Buchan team to continue to be at the forefront of this retail change.”

This understanding of the evolving needs of consumers has formed the foundation for the continuing transformation of Coastlands, with Buchan currently working on the second stage of Takiri House, as well as a future expansion of the centre.

Buchan Senior Associate James Burgess reflects on the next evolution “We’ve been involved with Coastlands coming up 25 years, and working through a strategy for the next 20 years has been a rewarding experience.”
