Competition: Art Prison

Sicily, Global

Overview

Art Prison is an architectural competition to transform an abandoned fortress on a scattered island in southern Sicily into an open-air contemporary art museum.

Buchan’s entry shows the internal gallery space floating above the fortress. It’s at this space throughout the scheme that the guests and viewers experience a distortion of reality and self-reflection. With a modern interpretation of jail bars directing flow throughout the gallery space, guests are able to imagine the life of a prisoner and their journey of self-reflection.

Lens ball windows penetrate the exterior boundary walls giving the viewer a distorted sense of reality, where down is up and up is down, playing on the concept of reflection through visual cues.
