Masterplan for Success

Grand Central Redevelopment Toowoomba, Australia

Grand Central Redevelopment

Toowoomba, Australia

Overview

Buchan’s masterplan for Grand Central embodies sound retail planning principles, placement of major tenants, clear pedestrian access, carparking and goods servicing provisions.

Today, the latest redevelopment showcases Buchan’s design with a two-level retail galleria precinct. The galleria links the existing centre across the railway line, two roads and creek to the city heart. The bridge’s ramp reconciles differing floor levels between the existing centres, simultaneously crossing the railway corridor.

Anchored by the region’s first H&M store, the galleria maximises retail sightlines with generous shopfront heights (4.5 metres). This continues with south light windows which run the full length of this space. A skylight scoops light and illuminates the curved timber ceilings. Additional low-energy lighting highlights the natural materials and bold, warm forms of the interior, frame the south light and view of the Toowoomba sky.

The project’s facades and major civic space on Margaret St, which were concept designed by FJMT, further unify the sites and create connections from and into the urban fabric.

The latest redevelopment marks a 20-year milestone for Buchan. We have worked on all stages of the centre from its concept design to master planning the current redevelopment for QIC over the past ten years.
