Buchan’s design maximises the volume and heritage features of the 1925 former Adelaide railway station. The coffered ceiling is a focus, as well as the 1920s ticket booths. A new 199sqm mezzanine floor is a significant feature of the design. Dominating the richly layered and detailed space is a soaring mural by Adelaide artist Emma Hack, depicting Madame Hanoi. The logos, menus and lacquer work on the coffee machine take elements extracted from the mural.
Dark timber walls and flooring evoke the interiors of traditional Vietnamese guesthouses. Ornate wrought iron screens and gates display along the interface with the Casino entry lobby. Externally, new French and Hanoi café-style windows hang between the existing granite columns, with a doorway opening to a morning café. Set beneath the Madame Hanoi mural, the café’s design is in an understated with black and white floor tiles creating a simple French aesthetic.
The opening marked the completion of the progressive upgrade of the existing Adelaide Casino facilities as part of a broader vision for the expansion of the property.
