The Landing acts as a social and economic drawcard to Wigram Skies’ master-planned community, south-west of Christchurch. Its design references the aeronautical history of the site (formerly the Wigram Aerodrome) as well as Maori motifs from developers Ngai Tahu Property.
Buchan was appointed to design key components of the retail and office buildings and deliver a low-rise, pedestrian-friendly complex around a palazzo-style town square. The precinct is home to retail, dining, commercial and community facilities in a high street-style environment.
Buchan, in conjunction with Kamo Marsh Landscape Architects, has designed The Landing’s two significant features. The first is the public town square and the second is ‘The Runway’. The Runway is the main thoroughfare featuring a continuous, ‘folded’ roof. The Runway’s varying roof height will add depth and elevation to the area, providing shoppers with a distinct space that is visually appealing and user-friendly.
The addition of a medical centre to the masterplan, also designed by Buchan, has strengthened the community offering as a one-stop shop destination for locals.
